ADAS Systems on the BMW 3 Series

G20/G21 (2019+) – Current Generation

Driving Assistant is standard on every G20 3 Series sold in the UK:

• Front Collision Warning + AEB – forward camera behind windscreen plus front radar behind the kidney grille. Works in tandem for pedestrian and vehicle detection.
• Lane Departure Warning – camera-based, with steering wheel vibration alert.
• Speed Limit Info – traffic sign recognition displayed on the instrument cluster or head-up display.

With Driving Assistant Professional (commonly specified on M Sport and above):

• Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go – radar-controlled, integrates with the 8-speed automatic for smooth speed matching.
• Lane Change Assistant – side radar sensors in the rear bumper detect adjacent lane traffic.
• Highway Assistant – hands-off motorway driving at speeds up to 37 mph in traffic.

F30/F31 (2012–2019) – Previous Generation

• Driving Assistant was optional – not all F30s have it. If your F30 has ACC, it uses a separate radar module behind the lower front bumper (not behind the kidney grille like the G20).
• Lane Departure Warning available as an option, camera-based.
• Parking sensors standard on most trims; Surround View optional on later F30 models.

Common BMW 3 Series ADAS Triggers

Bumper Repair or Grille Replacement

On the G20, the front radar sits behind the kidney grille – the same position as the BMW X5 and other current-generation models. A bumper repair, grille swap, or even a front number plate refitting that shifts the grille can misalign the radar. Active Cruise Control stops working, and Front Collision Warning may deactivate.

On the F30, the radar (if fitted) is behind the lower bumper grille, making it vulnerable to low-speed impacts and kerb contact.

After Windscreen Replacement

Both generations use a windscreen-mounted forward camera. If your 3 Series shows Lane Departure Warning or Speed Limit Info faults after glass replacement, the camera needs static recalibration – a procedure most windscreen companies can't perform for BMW.
