ADAS Systems on the BMW 7 Series

G70 (2023+): The current 7 Series comes standard with the full Driving Assistant Professional suite and adds systems that no other BMW saloon offers:

• Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go – long-range radar behind the kidney grille, operates to standstill in traffic.
• Highway Assistant – enables hands-free motorway driving at speeds up to 37 mph, using radar, camera, and ultrasonic sensors simultaneously.
• Parking Assistant Professional – 12 ultrasonic sensors and four Surround View cameras enable the 7 Series to park itself via remote control from outside the car.
• Front Collision Warning + AEB – forward camera behind the windscreen plus front radar.
• Lane Departure Warning + Lane Change Assistant – side radar sensors behind the rear bumper.
• Automatic Speed Limit Assist – camera-based sign recognition that actively adjusts vehicle speed.

The G70 also introduces BMW's first lidar-ready sensor bay above the windscreen – currently used for camera systems but designed for future lidar integration.

G11/G12 (2016–2022): Driving Assistant Professional was optional but widely specified on UK models. The G11 uses the same radar-behind-grille and camera-behind-windscreen layout as other CLAR-platform BMWs. The long-wheelbase G12 adds rear-facing cameras for traffic detection when reversing.

Why Your BMW 7 Series Might Need Calibration

After Collision Repair

The 7 Series has more sensor positions than any BMW saloon – front radar, windscreen camera, four surround cameras, side radar behind the rear bumper, and up to 12 ultrasonic sensors. A front-end collision can disturb multiple systems simultaneously. If your body shop has completed structural repair but dashboard warnings persist, a full system reset recalibrates every sensor in one session.

Windscreen Replacement

The 7 Series' windscreen houses not just the standard ADAS camera but also the sensor bay for Highway Assistant inputs. Replacing the windscreen without proper camera calibration disables Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Assist, and Highway Assistant. Given the 7 Series' price point, owners often expect the glass company to handle this – many can't.

Parking System Faults After Bodywork

With 12 ultrasonic sensors spread across front and rear bumpers, any repaint or bumper replacement on the 7 Series can affect parking sensor alignment. Surround View cameras at each corner are similarly sensitive to panel alignment changes. If remote parking no longer works cleanly, the parking sensors and cameras need recalibrating.

The 7 Series often needs a Full System Reset at £499 – especially after collision repair where multiple sensor groups are affected. Same fixed pricing as every other BMW, regardless of trim or specification level.
