BMW X1 ADAS Calibration

You've had the front bumper on your BMW X1 resprayed after a car park scrape – the paint looks perfect, but now Active Cruise Control is greyed out and Lane Departure Warning has stopped working. The X1 (U11, 2022+) sits on BMW's FAAR platform alongside the iX1 and 1 Series, but its raised SUV ride height positions the front radar at a different angle to its platform siblings. A bumper repair that wouldn't affect a 1 Series can shift the X1's radar enough to disable multiple safety systems.

ADAS Systems on the BMW X1

U11 (2022+): The current X1 shares BMW's FAAR platform with the iX1 and 1 Series, but its higher ground clearance and taller front end change where impacts affect the sensor hardware:

  • Front Collision Warning + AEB – forward camera behind the windscreen, front radar behind the kidney grille. The X1's raised ride height positions the grille radar higher than the 1 Series – roughly at trailer-hitch and tow-bar height in car parks.
  • Lane Departure Warning – camera-based lane monitoring with steering vibration.
  • Speed Limit Info – camera-based traffic sign recognition.

Driving Assistant Professional (optional, widely specified on xLine and M Sport):

  • Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go – radar-dependent, works to standstill.
  • Lane Change Assistant – side radar behind the rear bumper panels.
  • Parking Assistant Plus – ultrasonic sensors and Surround View cameras.

F48 (2016–2022): BMW's first front-wheel-drive SUV. Driving Assistant was optional on most trims – many base-spec F48 models don't have ADAS. Where fitted, the radar sits behind the lower grille and the camera is windscreen-mounted. The F48 used BMW's older UKL platform, meaning sensor positions differ from the current U11.

When Your BMW X1 Needs ADAS Calibration

After Bumper Repair or Respray

The X1's SUV height puts its kidney grille at the exact level of car park bollards, shopping trolleys, and trailer hitches. Front bumper resprays and minor cosmetic work often involve removing and refitting the grille – which can shift the radar module behind it. If ACC has deactivated after any front-end bodywork, radar calibration is the solution.

After Windscreen Replacement

Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, and the AEB camera feed all depend on the forward-facing camera mounted to the windscreen. After glass replacement, this camera must be recalibrated. If your glass company flagged that they couldn't complete the BMW calibration, our technicians handle it at any of our 70+ UK workshops.

Cat S or Cat N Purchase

The X1 is one of BMW's best-selling UK models, and pre-owned Cat S examples are common. If you've bought a Cat S X1 and ADAS warnings appear on the dashboard, the previous repair may not have included sensor recalibration – a step that body shops often overlook.

BMW X1 Calibration Pricing

ServicePrice
Windscreen Calibration£199
Radar/Sensor Calibration£349
Collision Calibration£349
Full System Reset£499

Front bumper work on the X1 typically means radar calibration at £349. If windscreen and bumper were both addressed in the same repair, collision calibration at £349 covers both sensor groups in one visit.

BMW X1 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the BMW X1

The U11 X1 and U11 iX1 share the same FAAR platform and identical sensor positions — the calibration procedure is the same. The iX1's electric drivetrain doesn't affect ADAS sensor placement. If you're unsure which model you have, let us know your registration and we'll confirm the specification.
