SmartSense Systems on the Hyundai NEXO

The NEXO (FE, 2018+) launched with a full SmartSense package that was advanced for its time – many features only reached mainstream Hyundai models years later.

• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – camera-plus-radar AEB with pedestrian detection. Standard on all UK trims.
• Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go – radar-based adaptive cruise.
• Lane Following Assist (LFA) – active lane centring combining camera and radar.
• Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) – lane departure correction via windscreen camera.

FCEV-specific note: The NEXO's hydrogen powertrain does not affect ADAS calibration – the SmartSense systems operate independently of the fuel cell stack. However, the NEXO's specialist status means many body shops have never worked on one. Incorrect panel reassembly after even minor repairs can displace sensors that a technician familiar with conventional Hyundais would catch automatically.

After Bodywork by Non-Specialist Shops

The NEXO's rarity means most body shops encounter it for the first time during a repair. Technicians may focus on the hydrogen system's safety requirements and overlook ADAS sensor positions during panel reassembly. If SmartSense features stopped working after your NEXO returned from a body shop, one or more sensors were likely displaced during the repair.

After Windscreen Replacement

FCA (camera element), LFA, LKA, and High Beam Assist rely on the windscreen camera. The NEXO's windscreen is a low-volume part – replacement availability can vary, and aftermarket glass may seat the camera housing differently. Camera calibration at £199 ensures correct alignment regardless of the glass supplier.

After Mirror Replacement or Door Work

The NEXO's Blind-Spot View Monitor cameras are built into the door mirror housings. If a mirror was replaced after impact, a mirror folding mechanism was repaired, or the door shell was worked on, the BVM camera angle may have changed. This system requires recalibration separate from the main SmartSense radar and windscreen camera.

NEXO owners with a single sensor fault – windscreen camera or front radar – pay the relevant fixed price with no FCEV surcharge. For collisions that affected multiple systems including BVM mirrors and parking sensors, the £499 Full System Reset covers the complete sensor suite.
