Land Rover Defender ADAS Calibration

You've taken your Defender through a deep water crossing, a rutted farm track, or a green lane – and now the dashboard is showing AEB warnings, ACC unavailable, or the Surround Camera view is misaligned. Some Defender owners search for ways to disable ADAS altogether after off-road use. Recalibration is the better answer – it restores your safety systems to factory accuracy so they work correctly on the road without false triggers.

ADAS Systems on the Land Rover Defender

The new Defender (L663, 2020–present) combines full road ADAS with Land Rover's off-road technology:

Road ADAS:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Steering Assist – front long-range radar behind the grille
  • Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) – radar + camera detection
  • Lane Keep Assist – windscreen camera
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blind Spot Assist – rear quarter radar sensors
  • Rear Traffic Monitor

Off-road and visibility systems:

  • 3D Surround Camera System – four cameras creating bird's-eye and 3D views, essential for tight off-road manoeuvring
  • ClearSight Ground View – front cameras display ground beneath the vehicle on the touchscreen
  • Wade Sensing – ultrasonic sensors in the door mirrors measuring water depth (standard on V8 and X-Dynamic, optional on others)
  • Terrain Response 2 – adapts drivetrain, throttle, and stability systems based on terrain type, using data from ADAS sensors

The Defender's ADAS sensors are designed to handle more punishment than a typical road car – but they still have calibration tolerances. Sustained off-road vibration, impacts from rocks or debris, and deep water crossings can gradually shift sensors beyond their working range.

Common ADAS Triggers for Defender Owners

Off-Road Use Causing ADAS Warnings

The Defender is built for off-road driving, but the ADAS sensors are calibrated for precision. Rough terrain, heavy vibration, side impacts from obstacles, or submerging sensors during wading can shift radar and camera alignment. Rather than disabling the safety systems – which removes AEB and ACC protection on motorways and A-roads – recalibration restores accurate readings so the systems don't false-trigger off-road and still protect you on the road.

Front Bumper and Bull Bar Work

Defender owners frequently fit aftermarket bull bars, winch bumpers, or protective grille guards. If the front bumper was removed during installation, the ACC radar behind the grille likely needs recalibrating. Even swapping from one bumper style to another can change the angle the radar sees through. If your cruise control stopped working after fitting accessories, the radar is the first thing to check. The Discovery and Discovery Sport share the same radar position behind the grille, but the Defender's aftermarket accessory culture makes this a more frequent calibration trigger.

Windscreen Replacement After Stone Damage

The Defender's upright windscreen and frequent use on unsurfaced roads makes it more prone to stone chips than most SUVs. After windscreen replacement, the forward-facing camera needs recalibration – Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, and the camera's contribution to AEB all depend on it. If your windscreen fitter couldn't complete the ADAS calibration, we handle the camera recalibration they couldn't.

Land Rover Defender ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Land Rover Defender

We strongly advise against it. Disabling AEB, ACC, and Lane Keep Assist removes protection that prevents accidents on public roads. If your Defender's ADAS is false-triggering after off-road use, the sensors have shifted — recalibration fixes the root cause. You keep full off-road capability AND working safety systems on the road. See our phantom braking guide for more on false triggers.
