Mazda CX-5 ADAS Calibration

You've had the front bumper repaired on your Mazda CX-5 and now the dashboard reads "MRCC unavailable" – Mazda Radar Cruise Control has lost its reference point. The CX-5's radar sensor sits directly behind the front Mazda emblem, and bumper work is the most common reason CX-5 owners need ADAS recalibration. ADAS Line recalibrates every i-Activsense system on the CX-5 at 70+ UK workshops, from £199.

When a front-end collision affects both the camera and the radar simultaneously – which is common after any direct front impact – both systems need recalibrating as separate procedures in a single appointment. "Front camera not working" and "front radar sensor fault" appearing together on the dash means two distinct faults, not one.

ADAS Systems on the Mazda CX-5

The CX-5 has carried a comprehensive i-Activsense suite since the second generation (KF, 2017+). The first-generation CX-5 (KE, 2012–2017) offered limited driver assistance – Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) was available as an option, but the full package only arrived with the KF.

On the KF and later models, the CX-5 includes:

  • Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) – radar sensor behind the front emblem, maintains set speed and following distance
  • Smart Brake Support (SBS) – high-speed automatic emergency braking via front radar
  • Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) – low-speed emergency braking using a near-infrared sensor, active below 30 km/h
  • Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) and Lane Departure Warning (LDWS) – both use the forward camera mounted behind the windscreen
  • Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) – rear radar sensors in the bumper corners
  • Driver Attention Alert (DAA) and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) – camera-dependent systems

The 2022 facelift CX-5 added Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS), which combines MRCC with LAS for semi-autonomous driving – making precise sensor calibration even more critical.

Why Your CX-5 Might Need i-Activsense Recalibration

After bumper repair or front-end collision: The CX-5's front radar sits behind the emblem on the upper grille. Any work that removes, replaces, or shifts the bumper assembly can move this sensor out of alignment. Both MRCC and SBS rely on the same radar – so a single bumper repair can disable cruise control and emergency braking simultaneously.

After windscreen replacement: The forward camera handles LAS, LDWS, TSR, and DAA. If your windscreen was replaced and any of these systems show warnings, the camera needs recalibrating to the CX-5's exact mounting position – our £199 Windscreen Calibration service.

"CX-5 owners often come to us after a minor front-end bump that looked cosmetic but knocked out MRCC and SBS at the same time – the radar behind the emblem is more exposed than drivers expect on an SUV of this size."

After rear bumper repair: BSM and RCTA sensors sit in the rear bumper corners. Rear-end impacts or parking damage can shift these sensors, disabling blind spot warnings and cross-traffic alerts.

Mazda CX-5 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Mazda CX-5

The KE CX-5 (2012–2017) has limited ADAS — mainly SCBS on higher trims. If your first-gen CX-5 has Smart City Brake Support and it's showing a fault after repair, it still needs calibration, but fewer systems are involved than on the KF model. See our guide to what ADAS calibration involves.
