Mercedes Citan ADAS Calibration

Your Mercedes Citan has come back from the panel beater with a clean bumper but Active Brake Assist showing a fault on the dashboard. The Citan is Mercedes's smallest commercial van, built on the Renault Kangoo platform but fitted with Mercedes ADAS systems that need manufacturer-specific calibration. Fleet managers and owner-drivers alike need these systems functioning – your Citan is a working vehicle, and every day off the road costs money.

ADAS Systems on the Mercedes Citan

The current Citan (W420, 2021+) is a significant step up from the first generation in ADAS capability. Based on the Renault Kangoo III platform, it uses Mercedes-calibrated sensors:

  • Active Brake Assist – automatic emergency braking using a forward-facing camera behind the windscreen. Standard across Citan Panel Van, Tourer, and eCitan variants.
  • Lane Keeping Assist – camera-based lane detection with steering correction. Alerts the driver when the van drifts without indicating.
  • Speed Limit Assist – camera reads road signs and displays current limits on the instrument cluster.
  • Traffic Sign Recognition – works alongside Speed Limit Assist via the same multifunction camera.
  • Parking sensors (rear) – ultrasonic sensors standard on most trims. Front sensors optional.

The first-generation Citan (W415, 2012–2020) has minimal ADAS – primarily parking sensors. The current W420 generation is the one with meaningful camera-based systems requiring calibration.

Unlike larger Mercedes models, the Citan does not use DISTRONIC radar-based cruise control. Its ADAS relies primarily on the forward camera behind the windscreen, making windscreen replacement the most calibration-critical event for this van.

When Your Mercedes Citan Needs ADAS Calibration

After Windscreen Replacement

The Citan's forward camera handles Active Brake Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. Commercial vans accumulate windscreen chips faster than cars – regular motorway use and following larger vehicles means replacement is common. After windscreen replacement, the camera must be recalibrated to restore all three systems.

After Front-End Collision

Front-end damage on a working van is a frequent occurrence. Even minor bumper repairs can affect camera mounting if the windscreen frame is involved. If Active Brake Assist faults appear after bodywork, the camera position needs verifying and potentially recalibrating.

Fleet Compliance

Commercial vehicles must maintain all safety systems in working order. If your Citan fleet has vehicles showing ADAS warnings, addressing them promptly avoids compliance issues during inspections.
