Mercedes GLS ADAS Calibration

The Mercedes GLS is the largest SUV in the Mercedes range – and it carries an ADAS sensor array to match. Built on the same platform as the GLE but with a longer wheelbase and seven seats, the GLS packs DISTRONIC, Active Brake Assist, and Active Steering Assist as standard. Its sheer size means more bumper surface area, more parking sensors, and more opportunities for sensor displacement during body repairs.

ADAS Systems on the Mercedes GLS

The GLS (X167, 2019+) shares its ADAS platform with the GLE but adds features suited to its flagship position:

  • DISTRONIC – long-range radar behind the front grille star badge. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. Standard on all GLS trims.
  • Active Brake Assist – automatic emergency braking using front radar and multifunction camera. Detects pedestrians and cyclists at junctions.
  • Active Steering Assist – standard across all GLS models. Provides lane centring on motorways using combined radar and camera data.
  • Active Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning – rear radar sensors monitor adjacent lanes and warn passengers opening doors into oncoming traffic or cyclists.
  • Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC – 12 ultrasonic sensors and a 360-degree surround camera system. Essential on a vehicle this large, and all sensors need correct calibration to function accurately.
  • PRE-SAFE – pre-collision preparation including seatbelt tensioning, seat adjustment, and window closure.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist – camera-based lane monitoring with active steering correction.
  • E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL – available suspension system that uses camera data to read the road ahead. While not a safety-critical ADAS system, it connects to the same sensor network.

Sensor locations mirror the GLE: front radar behind the star, multifunction camera on the windscreen, rear radars in both bumper corners, and ultrasonic sensors around the perimeter. The GLS's extended rear overhang means the rear parking sensors are further from the rear axle, making them more vulnerable to low-speed impacts.

Why Your GLS Might Need ADAS Calibration

Collision Repair on a Large Vehicle

The GLS's length and height make it susceptible to car park collisions, gate post impacts, and low-speed bumps that damage the front or rear bumpers. Front-end contact shifts the radar behind the star badge; rear impacts can displace blind spot sensors in the bumper corners. A single parking incident can trigger faults across multiple ADAS systems.

Windscreen Replacement

The multifunction camera behind the windscreen handles Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and automatic high beams simultaneously. On a vehicle this expensive, owners want every system restored promptly after glass replacement. Windscreen calibration addresses all camera-dependent functions in one session.

Parking System Faults After Bodywork

With 12 ultrasonic sensors and four surround-view cameras, the GLS parking system is complex. Bumper repairs, panel beating, or paintwork near sensor locations can cause false proximity warnings or dead zones. These are separate from the main radar calibration but equally important for safe daily use of a full-size SUV.

Mercedes GLS Calibration Pricing

ServicePrice
Windscreen Calibration£199
Radar/Sensor Calibration£349
Collision Calibration£349
Full System Reset£499

GLS owners with faults across radar, camera, and parking sensors after body repair typically benefit from the £499 Full System Reset – it covers every ADAS system in one appointment. For isolated windscreen replacements, the £199 calibration handles camera-dependent systems. See all Mercedes models we calibrate

Mercedes GLS ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Mercedes GLS

The GLS shares the same core ADAS platform as the GLE, so radar and camera calibration procedures are similar. The difference is scope — the GLS typically comes with a higher standard specification, meaning more systems are fitted as standard. The extended body also adds more parking sensors that may need recalibration after rear-end bodywork.
