Mercedes S-Class ADAS Calibration

The Mercedes S-Class carries more ADAS sensors than any other Mercedes on UK roads. Beyond the standard DISTRONIC radar and multifunction camera, the W223 S-Class introduced DRIVE PILOT – Mercedes's Level 2+ driving system that adds lidar, additional cameras, and redundant steering. When any of these sensors is disturbed, the entire network needs professional recalibration.

ADAS Technology on the Mercedes S-Class

The S-Class (W223, 2021+) is Mercedes's most sensor-dense vehicle, and the first production Mercedes with lidar:

  • DISTRONIC – long-range radar behind the front grille star badge. Handles adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go in traffic. The S-Class version supports tighter following distances and faster response than other Mercedes models.
  • DRIVE PILOT – Mercedes's Level 2+ system available on the W223. Adds a roof-mounted lidar sensor, stereo camera, and rear-window camera for semi-autonomous driving up to 60 km/h. This hardware is in addition to the standard ADAS suite.
  • Active Brake Assist – dual-source emergency braking using front radar and multifunction camera. S-Class versions can detect crossing pedestrians and cyclists at junctions.
  • Active Steering Assist – standard on all S-Class trims. Uses camera and radar fusion for lane centring on motorways and A-roads.
  • Active Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning – rear radars monitor adjacent lanes and warn passengers before opening doors into passing traffic.
  • Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC – 12 ultrasonic sensors plus a 360-degree camera system. The S-Class also supports remote parking via smartphone.
  • PRE-SAFE – anticipatory occupant protection including seat bolster inflation and noise-cancelling impulse before impact.

The S-Class has sensors in every direction: front radar behind the star, multifunction camera on the windscreen, lidar on the roof (DRIVE PILOT models), rear radar in both bumper corners, and ultrasonic sensors around the entire perimeter. A collision affecting even one panel can trigger faults across multiple systems.

When Your S-Class Needs ADAS Recalibration

After Front-End Repair or Collision

The S-Class front bumper houses the long-range radar behind the star badge. Any body shop work involving bumper removal, grille replacement, or front-end collision repair can misalign this sensor. Because the S-Class uses sensor fusion – radar, camera, and lidar working together – a fault on one sensor often disables dependent systems too. DISTRONIC, Active Brake Assist, and Active Steering Assist can all go down from a single displaced radar.

After Windscreen Replacement

The multifunction camera behind the windscreen manages Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and automatic high beams. On DRIVE PILOT-equipped models, additional cameras also sit near the windscreen area. Windscreen calibration on an S-Class can involve more camera targets than other Mercedes models.

DRIVE PILOT and Lidar Considerations

If your S-Class is equipped with DRIVE PILOT, the roof-mounted lidar sensor adds another calibration point. Any roof work, aerial installation, or impact affecting the roofline can disturb the lidar alignment. This is unique to the S-Class among current Mercedes models.

Mercedes S-Class Calibration Pricing

ServicePrice
Windscreen Calibration£199
Radar/Sensor Calibration£349
Collision Calibration£349
Full System Reset£499

S-Class owners dealing with multiple ADAS faults after collision repair typically need our £499 Full System Reset – it covers radar, camera, and all connected systems in one session. For isolated windscreen replacements, the £199 calibration restores camera-dependent functions. See all Mercedes models we calibrate

Mercedes S-Class ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Mercedes S-Class

DRIVE PILOT adds a roof-mounted lidar sensor that operates alongside the standard radar and camera systems. If your S-Class has DRIVE PILOT and the roofline or front end has been disturbed, the lidar may need calibration in addition to the radar and camera. Our technicians assess all sensor systems during the diagnostic phase.
