What's the difference between Gen 4 and Gen 5 Prius ADAS?

The fourth-generation Prius (2016–2022) uses TSS or TSS 2.0 — Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, and (on later models) Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The fifth-generation (2023+) upgrades to TSS 3.0 with Emergency Steering Assist, Proactive Driving Assist, and intersection collision avoidance. Why does my Prius need calibration after a windscreen replacement?

The Prius's windscreen camera controls multiple safety systems. When the glass is replaced, the camera's position shifts — even by a fraction of a degree, enough to cause false lane departure warnings or disable Lane Tracing Assist entirely. Our technicians recalibrate the camera to factory spec after every glass swap.

Can you calibrate an older Prius with basic Toyota Safety Sense?

Yes. We calibrate TSS 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 across all Prius generations. The first-gen TSS has fewer sensors, but the radar and camera still require professional calibration after repairs. We also calibrate the Corolla and Yaris, which share TSS 2.0 with the late Gen 4 Prius.

Does the Prius Plug-in Hybrid need different calibration?

No. The Prius Plug-in (PHEV) uses identical ADAS sensor hardware and mounting positions as the standard Prius hybrid. Calibration procedures and pricing are the same. The C-HR hybrid uses the same approach.

The fourth-generation Prius (2016–2022) shipped with TSS 1.0 or TSS 2.0 depending on the year, while the fifth-generation (2023+) jumps to TSS 3.0. Both generations use a front radar behind the lower grille and a windscreen-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror. The Prius's aerodynamic nose means the front radar sits lower than on Toyota's SUV models – closer to road debris and kerb-height impacts.

Prius ADAS – When Calibration Is Needed

After Windscreen Replacement

The Prius's steeply raked windscreen is prone to stone chips, making windscreen replacement common. The camera behind the mirror runs LDA, LTA, AHB, and (on Gen 5) ESA and PDA. After glass replacement, all these systems need recalibration. On the fifth-gen Prius, leaving the camera uncalibrated disables Proactive Driving Assist – a system unique to TSS 3.0.

After Front-End Collision or Bumper Repair

The Prius's low nose puts the front radar at kerb height – vulnerable to car park bumps, speed bumps at the wrong angle, and low-speed collisions. After bumper replacement or front-end bodywork, DRCC and PCS deactivate until radar recalibration restores alignment.
