ADAS Systems on the Volkswagen Tiguan

The Tiguan sits on VW's MQB platform in two generations, with the newer model significantly expanding the ADAS suite.

Tiguan Mk1 (AD, 2016–2023):

• Front Assist – automatic emergency braking via front radar behind the VW badge. Standard from 2018 on most trims.
• ACC – adaptive cruise control sharing the front radar. Standard on SEL and R-Line.
• Lane Assist – windscreen-mounted camera. Available from SE Navigation upward.
• Park Assist – ultrasonic sensors for semi-automated parking.
• Side Assist – blind spot monitoring via rear radar sensors. Available on higher trims.
• Rear Traffic Alert – warns of crossing vehicles when reversing.

Tiguan Mk2 (2024+):

• Travel Assist – combines ACC and Lane Assist for semi-automated driving.
• IQ.LIGHT – matrix LED headlights linked to the camera system.
• Park Assist Plus with Memory – records parking manoeuvres and repeats them automatically.
• Emergency Assist – detects driver incapacitation.

The Tiguan's front radar sits behind the VW badge – same as the Golf. But the Tiguan's higher bumper line means the badge sits at SUV height, more exposed to impacts from higher objects like loading bay edges and reversing contacts from taller vehicles.

Aftermarket Modifications Triggering ADAS Faults

The Tiguan attracts owners who modify: aftermarket grilles, front skid plates, bull bars, tow bar fittings, and even aftermarket camera systems. Any modification that moves, covers, or adds components near the front badge or windscreen can affect radar or camera alignment.

Aftermarket 360 camera installations are increasingly common on the Tiguan. When the factory parking system is supplemented or replaced with aftermarket cameras, the vehicle's sensor calibration can be disrupted – particularly if wiring or mounting brackets shift the original sensor positions.

After Bumper Repair

The Tiguan's front bumper extends further than the Golf's and is more likely to take contact damage from other vehicles or fixed objects. Body shops replacing or repainting the bumper disturb the radar behind the badge. Our radar calibration at £349 restores ACC and Front Assist after any bumper work.

After Windscreen Replacement

Lane Assist and Travel Assist (Mk2) depend on the windscreen-mounted camera. After any windscreen swap, windscreen calibration at £199 is required. The Tiguan's larger windscreen can present challenges for some windscreen providers – we complete the calibration at our workshops.
