BMW i3 ADAS Calibration

The BMW i3 was one of the first mass-produced EVs on UK roads, and thousands remain in daily use across urban areas. Built on BMW's dedicated LifeDrive architecture with carbon fibre-reinforced plastic body panels, the i3 carries a leaner ADAS setup than newer BMWs – but the sensors it does have still require professional calibration after collision repair or windscreen replacement.

ADAS Systems on the BMW i3

The i3 (I01, 2013–2022) was designed primarily as a city car, and its ADAS reflects that focus. The system configuration depends on the production year:

  • Driving Assistant (2014+) – Front Collision Warning with automatic emergency braking. Uses a forward-facing camera behind the windscreen – no front radar on pre-2018 models.
  • Park Distance Control – ultrasonic parking sensors front and rear. Standard across all i3 variants.
  • Parking Assistant (optional) – automated parallel parking using ultrasonic sensors.
  • Speed Limit Info (2018+ facelift) – camera-based sign recognition, added as part of the LCI update.
  • Active Cruise Control (2018+ facelift, optional) – only available on post-facelift models with the Driving Assistant Plus package. Uses a front radar module behind the lower bumper.

Pre-facelift i3s (2013–2017) rely almost entirely on the forward camera for ADAS functions. Post-facelift models (2018–2022) added a front radar for ACC, making them closer in sensor layout to the i4 and other modern BMWs.

Common BMW i3 ADAS Issues

After Windscreen Replacement

The i3's forward camera handles Front Collision Warning, AEB, and – on facelift models – Speed Limit Info. Because the i3 uses a uniquely shaped windscreen bonded to the CFRP body structure, replacement requires specialist fitting. If Driving Assistant shows a fault after new glass, the camera needs static recalibration.

Parking Sensor Faults After Minor Bumps

The i3's compact dimensions and urban use mean parking contact is common. The thermoplastic outer panels absorb minor impacts well, but ultrasonic sensors embedded in the bumpers can shift or crack during low-speed contact. Persistent parking sensor warnings after a bump usually mean a sensor needs replacing or recalibrating.

Post-Facelift Radar Issues

If your 2018+ i3 has Active Cruise Control and it stops engaging after front-end repair, the radar behind the lower bumper needs recalibration. This module is the same type used across BMW's broader range, positioned low where it's vulnerable to kerb strikes.

Most i3 owners need windscreen calibration at our £199 fixed rate – the forward camera is the primary ADAS sensor on this model. Facelift owners with ACC may also need radar calibration at £349.

BMW i3 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the BMW i3

Yes, though it's simpler than newer BMWs. Pre-facelift i3s (2013–2017) have a forward camera for Front Collision Warning and AEB. After windscreen replacement, this camera needs recalibration regardless of the model year. No radar calibration is needed unless you have a post-2018 model with Active Cruise Control.
