SmartSense Systems on the Hyundai INSTER

The INSTER (2024+) launches on a dedicated small-EV platform with SmartSense standard across UK trims.

• Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) 2.0 – camera-plus-radar AEB with pedestrian, cyclist, and junction detection. The latest FCA generation despite the INSTER's entry-level positioning.
• Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go – radar-based adaptive cruise. Standard on all UK trims – unusual for a vehicle this size.
• Highway Driving Assist (HDA) – combines SCC with Lane Following Assist for semi-automated motorway driving. A feature typically reserved for larger models like the Tucson.
• Lane Following Assist (LFA) – active lane centring using the windscreen camera.
• Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) – lane departure correction. Standard across all trims.
• Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) – rear radar for blind spot monitoring.
• Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist (RCCA) – cross-traffic detection when reversing.
• Surround View Monitor (SVM) – four cameras for 360-degree parking. Available on higher trims.

Small EV, full sensor suite: The INSTER's compact body concentrates more sensors per metre than any other Hyundai. The front radar and camera are closer together than on larger models, and rear sensors are positioned with tighter tolerances. This means even minor panel work can affect multiple systems simultaneously.

Urban Driving Impacts

The INSTER is designed for city use – tight parking, narrow streets, and frequent low-speed contact. Its short front overhang positions the bumper-mounted radar close to potential impact points. Urban parking nudges that would clear the radar on a Tucson can directly contact the sensor area on an INSTER. If FCA and SCC deactivated after a parking bump, the front radar has likely shifted.

After Windscreen Replacement

HDA, LFA, LKA, FCA (camera element), and High Beam Assist all depend on the windscreen camera. The INSTER's smaller windscreen means the camera module sits in a more confined housing than on larger Hyundais. After any glass replacement, camera calibration at £199 is required – and the INSTER's newer platform may not yet be in every windscreen company's calibration database.

Charging Station Proximity

Like the IONIQ 5, the INSTER frequents public charging stations where tight manoeuvring creates bumper contact risk. The INSTER's compact dimensions make it easier to park but also mean the front and rear sensors sit closer to obstacles. Minor charging station contact can trigger multiple ADAS warnings.
