Hyundai IONIQ ADAS Calibration

Before the IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 became their own models, there was the original Hyundai IONIQ (AE, 2016–2022) – the first car designed from the ground up to offer hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric powertrains on a single platform. All three variants came with SmartSense, and with thousands still on UK roads, calibration demand is steady – particularly after windscreen replacements and front-end repairs.

SmartSense Systems on the Original IONIQ

The IONIQ (AE) carried SmartSense from its 2016 launch, though the package expanded with the 2019 facelift. All three powertrains – Hybrid, PHEV, and Electric – use identical sensor hardware.

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) – camera-plus-radar AEB. Pre-facelift (2016–2019) covers vehicles only. Post-facelift (2019–2022) adds pedestrian detection.
  • Smart Cruise Control (SCC) with Stop & Go – radar-dependent adaptive cruise. Standard on Premium and Premium SE trims; not available on base SE.
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) – camera-based lane departure correction. Standard from 2017 across most trims.
  • High Beam Assist (HBA) – windscreen camera, higher trims only.
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (BCA) – rear-quarter radar sensors. Warning-only on the AE – no active steering intervention (that came with the IONIQ 5).

The forward radar sits behind the front bumper Hyundai emblem. The forward camera is mounted to the windscreen behind the rearview mirror. The AE IONIQ uses conventional sensor positions – unlike the E-GMP models (IONIQ 5/6) where the radar sits lower in the bumper.

Common ADAS Issues on the Original IONIQ

After windscreen replacement

The IONIQ Hybrid and Electric are popular with high-mileage drivers, and windscreen replacements from stone damage are common. FCA, LKA, and HBA all depend on the windscreen camera. Glass companies often complete the swap but can't perform the SmartSense camera calibration – leaving safety features offline.

After bumper repair on older models

The AE IONIQ is now 4-10 years old, and front bumper repairs from parking damage are increasing. The radar behind the emblem controls SCC and contributes to FCA. If your IONIQ's Smart Cruise Control became unavailable after bodywork, the radar needs recalibration.

Hyundai IONIQ ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Hyundai IONIQ

Yes. The original IONIQ (AE, 2016–2022) uses Hyundai's conventional platform with the radar behind the front emblem. The IONIQ 5 and IONIQ 6 use the E-GMP electric platform with different sensor positions. Calibration procedures and targets differ between the two platforms.
