ADAS Systems on the Mercedes Sprinter

The Sprinter (W907/W910, 2018+) carries more ADAS technology than most van operators realise:

  • Active Brake Assist – radar-based automatic emergency braking. Standard on all new Sprinters. Uses a front radar sensor behind the Mercedes star badge on the grille.
  • DISTRONIC – adaptive cruise control available on higher-spec Sprinters (Progressive Line). Particularly useful for long-haul fleet drivers maintaining motorway following distances.
  • Crosswind Assist – detects sudden crosswinds and applies corrective braking. Critical for high-sided panel vans and box bodies.
  • Blind Spot Assist – available on longer wheelbase models. Uses rear radar sensors to monitor blind spots, especially important given the Sprinter's large dimensions.
  • Attention Assist – drowsiness monitoring for drivers on long shifts.
  • Traffic Sign Assist – camera-based speed limit recognition, standard on models with the multifunction camera.

The Sprinter's front radar sits behind the grille star badge, identical in principle to the Mercedes passenger car setup. The multifunction camera (where fitted) is behind the windscreen. Commercial use means these sensors face more road debris, vibration, and wear than typical passenger vehicles.

Common Sprinter ADAS Triggers

Dashboard Warning Lights

Sprinter drivers frequently report ADAS warning lights with no clear cause. Commercial vehicles accumulate vibration and road impact faster than passenger cars – the front radar can gradually drift out of calibration without any single triggering event. When the dashboard shows an Active Brake Assist or DISTRONIC warning, radar calibration is usually the fix.

Fleet Maintenance and Bodywork

Fleet Sprinters regularly undergo bumper repairs, grille replacements, and windscreen swaps as part of normal commercial wear. Each of these events can disturb ADAS sensors. Fleet managers should factor ADAS recalibration into standard maintenance schedules after any front-end work.

Windscreen Replacement

Sprinters with the multifunction camera need windscreen calibration after glass replacement. This is the same camera system used across the Mercedes range – from the A-Class to the E-Class – it handles lane keeping and traffic sign recognition.

Mercedes Sprinter ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Mercedes Sprinter

All Sprinters from 2018 (W907/W910) onwards have Active Brake Assist as standard. DISTRONIC, Blind Spot Assist, and Traffic Sign Assist are available on higher-spec models. Even base-spec Sprinters have front radar that can need recalibration after bumper or grille work.
