Mercedes E-Class ADAS Calibration

The Mercedes E-Class is one of our most-requested Mercedes models for ADAS calibration. Whether it's a W213 with DISTRONIC radar behind the star badge or a newer W214 with the expanded Intelligent Drive package, E-Class owners come to us most often after bumper repairs that knock out cruise control and emergency braking.

ADAS Systems on the Mercedes E-Class

The E-Class (W213, 2016–2023) introduced Mercedes's full ADAS suite as standard across most trims:

  • DISTRONIC – adaptive cruise control using a long-range radar sensor behind the front grille star badge. Maintains following distance and brakes automatically in traffic.
  • Active Brake Assist – automatic emergency braking via the same front radar plus the windscreen-mounted multifunction camera. Intervenes if you don't react to a collision risk.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist – uses the multifunction camera to read lane markings and steer you back if you drift without indicating.
  • PRE-SAFE – detects an unavoidable collision and pre-tensions seatbelts, closes windows, adjusts head restraints.
  • Active Steering Assist – available on higher trims (E 220d AMG Line and above). Combines camera and radar data for semi-autonomous motorway driving.
  • Blind Spot Assist – rear-mounted radar sensors on both sides, warning you during lane changes.

The E-Class radar sits behind the three-pointed star on the front grille. Any work involving the front bumper, grille removal, or star badge replacement moves this sensor. The multifunction camera sits behind the windscreen near the rearview mirror – windscreen replacement disturbs it.

Why Your E-Class Might Need ADAS Calibration

After Bumper Repair

The E-Class front bumper houses the radar sensor behind the star badge. Body shops regularly remove and refit bumpers for paintwork, dent repair, or collision damage. Even careful refitting can leave the radar misaligned by fractions of a degree – enough for DISTRONIC to shut down entirely.

A typical scenario: a minor rear-end collision, bumper repaired and repainted – but DISTRONIC won't re-engage. The body shop confirms the bumper is structurally sound, but the radar behind the star badge shifted during removal. The repair shop can't recalibrate it – that's where we step in.

After Windscreen Replacement

The E-Class multifunction camera handles three systems simultaneously: Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and automatic high beams. Replacing the windscreen means removing and refitting this camera – windscreen calibration is mandatory to restore all three.

Cat S/N E-Class Purchases

The E-Class is common in the Cat S salvage market. Buyers who've repaired front-end damage often find DISTRONIC and Active Brake Assist disabled. If you've purchased a Cat S or Cat N E-Class and cruise control isn't working, the radar almost certainly needs recalibration. We also calibrate other popular Mercedes models including the GLE, A-Class, and Sprinter.

Mercedes E-Class ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Mercedes E-Class

Yes. The long-range radar for DISTRONIC sits directly behind the star badge. Removing the grille or star for repair, replacement, or even a cosmetic swap moves the radar's alignment. Recalibration is required to restore adaptive cruise control and Active Brake Assist.
