ADAS Systems on the Mercedes Vito

The Vito (W447, 2014+ / facelift 2020+) carries a growing list of ADAS features, with more systems becoming standard across successive model years:

• Active Brake Assist – radar-based automatic emergency braking. Standard on all Vitos from 2020 facelift onwards. Uses a front radar sensor behind the Mercedes star badge on the grille.
• DISTRONIC – adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. Available on Tourer and higher-spec panel van models. Uses the same front radar as Active Brake Assist.
• Crosswind Assist – detects sudden crosswinds and applies corrective braking. Standard on all models – critical for high-sided Vitos and crew-cab configurations.
• Blind Spot Assist – rear radar sensors monitoring blind spots. Available on Tourer and Select models.
• Attention Assist – drowsiness monitoring for drivers on long shifts. Standard across the range.
• Traffic Sign Assist – camera-based speed limit recognition on models with the multifunction camera.

The Vito's front radar sits behind the grille star badge – the same location as the larger Sprinter. Commercial use means more frequent bumper contact, more vibration, and more wear on sensor alignment than typical passenger vehicle use.

Fleet Maintenance and Bumper Repairs

Vitos in daily commercial use accumulate bumper damage faster than passenger vehicles – loading bay contacts, tight depot manoeuvring, and urban delivery driving all take their toll on the front end. Every time the bumper is removed for repair or replacement, the radar behind the star badge risks misalignment. Fleet workshops should include ADAS recalibration in the standard repair checklist after any front-end work.

Windscreen Replacement

Vitos with the multifunction camera require windscreen calibration after glass replacement. Commercial vehicles replace windscreens more frequently than passenger cars due to motorway stone chip exposure. The calibration restores Active Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign Assist where fitted.

Warning Lights During Normal Operation

Commercial Vitos covering high daily mileage can experience gradual radar drift from constant vibration. If Active Brake Assist or DISTRONIC warnings appear on the dashboard with no obvious trigger, the radar may have shifted over time.
