ADAS Systems on the Nissan Townstar

The Townstar (2022–present) is available in both petrol and electric variants, with the same ADAS across both powertrains:

• Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) – Camera and radar-based collision prevention. Standard on all Townstar trims including the base van specification.
• Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – Camera-based lane monitoring through the windscreen.
• Blind Spot Warning (BSW) – Radar sensors in the rear quarters detecting vehicles in blind spots during lane changes. Particularly useful on a van with limited rear visibility.
• Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) – Warns of crossing traffic when reversing out of loading bays or parking spaces.
• Intelligent Around View Monitor (AVM) – Available on Tekna trim. Four cameras for a 360-degree overhead view – essential for manoeuvring a van in tight urban delivery zones.
• Traffic Sign Recognition – Camera-based speed limit display.

Key Townstar detail: The Townstar's van configuration means the rear sensors (BSW and RCTA) are more critical than on a passenger car – van drivers have less rear visibility through a solid rear panel. These sensors sit in the rear bumper area and are frequently damaged during reversing into loading bays, which is an everyday occurrence for delivery vans.

Townstar – Common Calibration Triggers

Loading bay reversing damage: Van drivers reverse into loading bays multiple times daily. The Townstar's rear bumper absorbs regular contact – and the BSW and RCTA sensors embedded in the rear quarters can shift from repeated low-speed impacts. When Blind Spot Warning stops alerting during lane changes, it's a safety risk on motorways between delivery stops.

Front bumper and grille damage: The Townstar's front radar handles IEB. Commercial vehicles accumulate front-end damage from tight streets, delivery zones, and low-speed manoeuvring. After bumper repair or replacement, the radar needs recalibration – the same procedure as the Nissan Qashqai and Juke.

Windscreen replacement: Van windscreens take a beating from motorway driving with loaded vehicles. After windscreen replacement, the forward camera controlling LDW and contributing to IEB needs static recalibration. Many commercial glass fitters replace van windscreens quickly but skip the ADAS step.

Mirror replacement: If your Townstar has AVM and a door mirror was replaced after being clipped (a daily risk for delivery vans), the replacement mirror's camera needs calibrating into the AVM system.
