BMW 1 Series ADAS Calibration

Your BMW 1 Series picked up a scrape on the front bumper in a car park – barely visible, no structural damage. But now Active Cruise Control won't engage and the dashboard shows a Driving Assistant fault. The 1 Series (F40, 2019+) is BMW's most compact model, and its shorter front overhang puts the kidney grille – and the radar sensor behind it – closer to everyday impact zones than any other BMW. What looks like cosmetic damage often shifts the radar enough to disable multiple safety systems.

ADAS Systems on the BMW 1 Series

The current 1 Series (F40, 2019+) is built on BMW's FAAR front-wheel-drive platform – the same architecture as the BMW iX1. Driving Assistant is standard:

  • Front Collision Warning + AEB – forward camera behind the windscreen plus front radar behind the kidney grille. The 1 Series' compact nose means the radar sits closer to potential impact points than on larger BMWs.
  • Lane Departure Warning – camera-based lane tracking with steering wheel vibration.
  • Speed Limit Info – camera-based traffic sign recognition.

With Driving Assistant Professional (optional, more common on M Sport trim):

  • Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go – radar-controlled speed matching.
  • Lane Change Assistant – side radar sensors behind the rear bumper panels.

Previous generation (F20/F21, 2011–2019): The F20 offered Driving Assistant as an option – many base models don't have ADAS. Where fitted, the radar is behind the lower front bumper, and the camera is windscreen-mounted. If you're unsure whether your F20 has ADAS, check for ACC buttons on the steering wheel or a camera housing visible behind the rearview mirror.

Why Your BMW 1 Series Might Need Calibration

Front Bumper Impacts

The 1 Series' compact dimensions mean the front grille sits lower and closer to typical car park hazards – bollards, kerbs, and other vehicles' tow bars. A low-speed bump that wouldn't reach the radar on a 3 Series or X5 can directly contact the 1 Series' grille area. If Front Collision Warning or ACC deactivates after a minor bump, the radar behind the kidney grille has likely shifted.

After Windscreen Replacement

The forward camera handles Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, and feeds data to the emergency braking system. After windscreen replacement, this camera must be recalibrated – a step that many glass companies can't complete for BMW vehicles. If Driving Assistant faults appear immediately after new glass, the camera calibration is the missing step.

Rear Bumper and Side Radar

If your 1 Series has Driving Assistant Professional, Lane Change Assistant relies on side radar sensors behind the rear bumper. A rear-end shunt or rear bumper replacement can misalign these sensors, causing blind spot warnings to disappear or trigger incorrectly.

BMW 1 Series Calibration Pricing

ServicePrice
Windscreen Calibration£199
Radar/Sensor Calibration£349
Collision Calibration£349
Full System Reset£499

A front bumper repair on the 1 Series usually means radar recalibration at £349 – the sensor behind the kidney grille is the first component affected by any front-end contact. Fixed price, no hidden diagnostic fees.

BMW 1 Series ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the BMW 1 Series

All F40 models (2019+) have Driving Assistant as standard — including Front Collision Warning, AEB, and Lane Departure Warning. Older F20 models (2011–2019) may or may not have ADAS depending on the original specification. Check for ACC steering wheel buttons or a camera housing behind the rearview mirror to confirm.
