BMW i5 ADAS Calibration

Highway Assistant has disengaged on your BMW i5 and won't re-activate – even though nothing looks damaged. The i5 shares the CLAR platform with the combustion 5 Series but adds BMW's latest sensor generation as standard on every variant. Driving Assistant Professional, Highway Assistant, and Parking Assistant Plus all come fitted from factory, giving the i5 one of BMW's most comprehensive ADAS suites.

ADAS Systems on the BMW i5

The i5 (G60/i20, 2023+) is the electric version of BMW's executive saloon. Every i5 variant – eDrive40, M60, and Touring – ships with the full Driving Assistant Professional package:

  • Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go – front radar behind the closed kidney grille maintains speed and distance on motorways and in traffic.
  • Highway Assistant – semi-autonomous motorway driving combining radar, forward camera, and side radar for hands-off cruising.
  • Steering and Lane Control Assistant – active lane centring using the forward camera and side radar modules.
  • Front Collision Warning with AEB – forward camera plus front radar provide dual-source collision detection.
  • Lane Departure Warning – camera-based lane tracking with steering wheel vibration.
  • Speed Limit Info – camera reads road signs, displayed on head-up display.
  • Parking Assistant Plus with Surround View – four cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

The i5's closed kidney grille positions the radar behind a flat panel – similar to the iX. Side radar modules behind the rear bumper handle blind spot detection and Lane Change Assistant.

Why Your BMW i5 Might Need ADAS Calibration

After Windscreen Replacement

The i5's forward camera handles Lane Departure Warning, Front Collision Warning, Speed Limit Info, and provides input to Highway Assistant. When the windscreen is replaced, this camera must be statically recalibrated using BMW-specific targets. Many glass companies fit the windscreen but leave the ADAS systems faulting.

After Front-End Collision or Bumper Repair

The closed kidney grille design means any front-end impact – even cosmetic bumper work – can shift the radar behind the flat panel. If Active Cruise Control or Highway Assistant disables after bodywork, radar calibration is required. The i5's aerodynamic front end positions the radar higher than on the i4, but it's still directly behind the grille panel.

Multi-System Faults After Collision

A significant front-end impact on the i5 can disable the forward camera, front radar, and parking sensors simultaneously. Highway Assistant, ACC, lane keeping, and surround view all go down together. Our full system reset at £499 covers all sensor groups in a single appointment.

BMW i5 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the BMW i5

The i5 and combustion 5 Series share the CLAR platform and identical ADAS hardware. Sensor positions, calibration targets, and procedures are the same. The main difference is the i5's closed grille panel versus the 5 Series' traditional kidney grille — both house the front radar in the same location.
