BMW i8 ADAS Calibration

Picked up your BMW i8 from the body shop and the Driving Assistant warning won't clear? The i8's exotic mid-engine layout and carbon fibre-aluminium construction make it unlike any other BMW – but its ADAS sensors still follow familiar principles. Calibration after collision repair is critical on a car where every panel is precision-fitted and sensor placement tolerances are tight.

ADAS Systems on the BMW i8

The i8 (I12 Coupe / I15 Roadster, 2014–2020) was BMW's plug-in hybrid sports car. Its ADAS is more restrained than BMW's SUVs and saloons, reflecting its performance-focused design:

  • Driving Assistant – Front Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking via a forward-facing camera behind the windscreen. Standard on all i8 variants.
  • Park Distance Control – front and rear ultrasonic sensors. Standard across Coupe and Roadster.
  • Speed Limit Info – camera-based traffic sign recognition. Standard from 2014.
  • Surround View (optional) – four cameras for bird's-eye parking view. Available as an option, more common on later production years.

The i8 does not have Active Cruise Control (ACC) or Lane Departure Warning in its standard configuration – unlike the i4 or 5 Series. The ADAS focus is on collision avoidance rather than semi-autonomous driving. The forward camera behind the windscreen is the primary ADAS sensor.

Common BMW i8 ADAS Issues

After Collision Repair

The i8's low, wide stance and scissor doors mean body repairs are specialist work. The forward camera must be recalibrated after any front-end repair that disturbs the windscreen area or camera mounting. Given the i8's value, owners rightly expect every system to function perfectly after repair – collision calibration ensures the Driving Assistant suite is restored.

After Windscreen Replacement

The i8's steeply raked windscreen houses the forward camera for Front Collision Warning, AEB, and Speed Limit Info. The aggressive windscreen angle means even small positional changes during replacement affect camera alignment significantly. Windscreen calibration using static targets restores accuracy.

Parking Sensor Faults

The i8's aerodynamic body panels sit very close to the ground. Parking sensors in the front splitter area are vulnerable to kerb contact, speed bumps, and ramp approaches. If parking warnings become intermittent or inaccurate after a scrape, the sensors may need attention.

BMW i8 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the BMW i8

Yes. The i8 was designed as a performance car, so it carries Driving Assistant (Front Collision Warning + AEB) and parking sensors but lacks Active Cruise Control and Lane Departure Warning found on the 3 Series or i4. The systems it does have still require professional calibration after windscreen replacement or collision repair.
