BMW Z4 ADAS Calibration

Front Collision Warning is flashing on your BMW Z4's instrument cluster after a stone chip repair on the front bumper. The Z4 is a roadster first, but the current generation carries genuine ADAS hardware that requires professional calibration when disturbed. Its low, short-bonnet design puts sensors in positions more exposed to road debris and minor impacts than any BMW SUV or saloon.

ADAS Systems on the BMW Z4

The current Z4 (G29, 2019+) is co-developed with the Toyota Supra but uses BMW's own ADAS hardware and software. The previous generation (E89, 2009–2016) has minimal ADAS and rarely requires calibration. For the G29:

  • Driving Assistant (standard) – Front Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking via forward camera behind the windscreen. Standard across sDrive20i, sDrive30i, and M40i variants.
  • Active Cruise Control (optional) – available with the Driving Assistant Professional package. Uses a front radar behind the lower front bumper grille.
  • Lane Departure Warning – camera-based lane tracking, standard with Driving Assistant.
  • Speed Limit Info – camera-based sign recognition, standard across all trims.
  • Park Distance Control – front and rear ultrasonic sensors, standard.
  • Parking Assistant (optional) – automated parallel parking.

The Z4's low nose height means the forward camera's field of view through the windscreen has a different angle than BMW saloons. The front radar, where fitted, sits very close to the road surface behind the lower air intake – vulnerable to stone damage and ground clearance issues.

Common BMW Z4 ADAS Issues

After Windscreen Replacement

The Z4's windscreen is smaller and more steeply raked than a 3 Series or 5 Series, and the forward camera sits at a unique mounting angle. After windscreen replacement, the camera needs recalibration using BMW-specific static targets. Generic procedures won't account for the Z4's distinct windscreen geometry.

Front Bumper Damage

The Z4's low front bumper catches kerbs, speed bumps, and road debris more easily than higher-riding BMWs. If your Z4 has the Driving Assistant Professional package with ACC, the radar behind the lower intake is particularly exposed. Radar calibration is needed after any bumper repair or replacement.

Stone Chip Damage to Sensor Areas

Roadsters accumulate stone chips around the lower front end. If chips or repairs are near the radar sensor area behind the front intake, even minor bodywork can shift sensor alignment. If ACC becomes intermittent with no obvious cause, the radar position may have been subtly disturbed.

BMW Z4 Calibration Pricing

ServicePrice
Windscreen Calibration£199
Radar/Sensor Calibration£349
Collision Calibration£349
Full System Reset£499

Z4 owners with Driving Assistant only (no ACC) typically need our £199 windscreen calibration after glass replacement. Those with the Driving Assistant Professional package may need radar calibration at £349 after bumper repairs.

BMW Z4 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the BMW Z4

The previous-generation Z4 (E89, 2009–2016) has very limited ADAS — primarily parking sensors and optional cruise control without radar. It generally doesn't require ADAS camera or radar calibration. The current G29 (2019+) is the model with meaningful ADAS that needs professional calibration after sensor disturbance.
