Ford S-MAX ADAS Calibration

If your Ford S-MAX's Adaptive Cruise Control cut out after a front-end repair, the radar behind the grille badge has almost certainly shifted. The S-MAX shares Ford's CD platform with the Galaxy and Mondeo – same sensor hardware, but its sportier MPV body sits lower than the Galaxy's, giving the radar and BLIS sensors different calibration parameters that body shops need to account for.

ADAS Systems on the Ford S-MAX

The S-MAX Mk2 (2015–2023) carries the same Co-Pilot360-era ADAS as its CD platform siblings, the Galaxy and Mondeo:

  • Pre-Collision Assist with AEB – forward camera and radar detect vehicles and pedestrians. The radar mounts behind the Ford badge on the front grille.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go – radar-dependent distance management. Standard on Titanium and Vignale trims, optional on Zetec.
  • Lane-Keeping System – the windscreen camera monitors lane markings. From the 2019 facelift, the system adds active steering correction rather than alerts only.
  • BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert – rear bumper radar sensors. The S-MAX's lower roofline compared to the Galaxy means BLIS detection geometry differs – calibration targets are not interchangeable between the two.
  • Active Park Assist 2.0 – ultrasonic bumper sensors for automated parking manoeuvres.

The S-MAX Mk1 (2006–2014) predates meaningful ADAS – no calibration typically required unless aftermarket systems were added.

When Your Ford S-MAX Needs Recalibration

After bumper or grille work

The S-MAX's radar sits behind the front grille emblem. Any bumper removal, grille replacement, or front-end collision repair shifts the sensor. Pre-Collision Assist and ACC will show as unavailable until radar recalibration restores alignment.

After windscreen replacement

The forward camera behind the rearview mirror controls Lane-Keeping, Traffic Sign Recognition, and the camera input to Pre-Collision Assist. If your windscreen fitter replaced the glass but couldn't complete the camera calibration, we handle it at 70+ workshops.

Ford S-MAX ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Ford S-MAX

The S-MAX and Galaxy share the CD platform with the same sensor types. The difference is body geometry — the S-MAX sits lower with a sportier roofline, which changes BLIS detection angles and radar mounting height. Calibration parameters are model-specific, not interchangeable. See all Ford models we calibrate.
