Mercedes G-Class ADAS Calibration

Unlike every other Mercedes SUV, the G-Class uses body-on-frame construction – the body sits on a separate ladder chassis rather than a unibody shell. This matters for ADAS calibration because sensor mounting points on the body panels can shift independently of the chassis after off-road use, collision repair, or even heavy modifications. If your G-Class DISTRONIC or Active Brake Assist has stopped working, the body-to-frame relationship may be affecting sensor alignment.

ADAS Systems on the Mercedes G-Class

The G-Class (W463a, 2018+) underwent a full redesign that brought modern ADAS to the iconic body-on-frame platform:

  • DISTRONIC – adaptive cruise control using the long-range radar sensor. On the G-Class, the radar sits behind the front grille rather than behind a star badge, due to the flat-front design.
  • Active Brake Assist – automatic emergency braking via front radar and the windscreen-mounted multifunction camera.
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist – camera-based lane monitoring with corrective steering. Functions best on well-marked motorways; the G-Class's upright driving position gives the camera a different field of view compared to lower-slung Mercedes models.
  • Active Blind Spot Assist – rear radar sensors in the bumper area, monitoring adjacent lanes during motorway driving.
  • Traffic Sign Assist – speed limit recognition via the multifunction camera, displayed on the instrument cluster.
  • PARKTRONIC – ultrasonic parking sensors around the vehicle. The G-Class's flat body panels and exposed corners make parking assist particularly useful.
  • Active Steering Assist – available on AMG Line and above, providing semi-autonomous lane centring on motorways.

The G-Class sensor layout differs from unibody Mercedes models. The flat front end positions the radar differently behind the grille, and the body-on-frame construction means the sensor mounting points can flex relative to the chassis – something that doesn't happen on monocoque models like the GLE or E-Class.

G-Class ADAS – Unique Calibration Considerations

Body-on-Frame Sensor Alignment

The G-Class's separate body and chassis create a calibration variable that other Mercedes models don't have. After heavy off-road use, body lift installation, or collision repair, the body panels may sit at slightly different angles relative to the chassis. This can shift the radar and camera mounting points enough to cause ADAS faults. Calibration needs to account for the body's actual position, not a factory-assumed position.

After Front-End Collision or Grille Work

The G-Class's flat, vertical front end is more exposed to impacts than the sloped fronts of Mercedes saloons and crossovers. The radar behind the grille is vulnerable to direct hits, and the flat bumper design means even moderate impacts transfer force directly to the sensor mounting area. Radar calibration is essential after any front-end work.

Windscreen Replacement

The G-Class windscreen is more upright than most modern vehicles. The multifunction camera behind the glass handles Active Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Assist, and automatic high beams. After replacement, windscreen calibration restores all three systems – the steeper windscreen angle requires specific calibration parameters.

Mercedes G-Class Calibration Pricing

ServicePrice
Windscreen Calibration£199
Radar/Sensor Calibration£349
Collision Calibration£349
Full System Reset£499

G-Class owners most commonly need radar calibration after front-end work or grille modification – that's our £349 fixed rate including full diagnostic scan. For G-Class models with both radar and camera faults after collision repair, the £349 Collision Calibration covers both systems. See all Mercedes models we calibrate

Mercedes G-Class ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Mercedes G-Class

Yes. The G-Class is the only Mercedes SUV with body-on-frame construction, meaning the body panels — where sensors are mounted — sit on a separate chassis. After collision repair, off-road impacts, or body modifications like lifts, the sensor positions can shift relative to the vehicle's centre line. Our technicians account for this when calibrating G-Class ADAS systems.
