Toyota GR86 ADAS Calibration

The Toyota GR86 shares more than its boxer engine with the Subaru BRZ – it also shares its ADAS hardware. The GR86's safety systems are derived from Subaru's EyeSight technology, not Toyota Safety Sense. This means different cameras, different calibration software, and different diagnostic protocols from every other Toyota in the lineup. Our IMI-certified technicians calibrate the GR86's EyeSight-derived systems at 70+ UK workshops, from £199.

ADAS Systems on the Toyota GR86

The GR86 (2021+) is built on a platform co-developed with Subaru – the same underpinning as the Subaru BRZ. Its ADAS hardware comes from Subaru's EyeSight lineage:

  • Pre-Collision System – automatic emergency braking using a forward-facing camera. Derived from Subaru's EyeSight stereo camera system, though the GR86 uses a monocular camera setup rather than the full dual-camera EyeSight found in Subaru SUVs.
  • Lane Departure Warning – camera-based lane monitoring that alerts when drifting without signalling.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control – on models equipped with the automatic gearbox. Not available on manual variants.

The GR86's ADAS is deliberately minimal for a sports car – no blind spot monitoring, no rear cross-traffic alert, no lane keeping assist. The windscreen-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror is the single sensor responsible for all safety features on this model.

Key distinction: because the hardware is Subaru-derived, the GR86 does not respond to Toyota Safety Sense diagnostic tools. It requires Subaru-protocol calibration equipment – different from what a standard Toyota dealer would use for a Yaris or Corolla.

Why Your GR86 Might Need ADAS Calibration

After Windscreen Replacement

Every ADAS function on the GR86 depends on the windscreen camera. A glass replacement moves the camera from its factory-calibrated position. Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Warning, and ACC (on automatics) all stop functioning until the camera is professionally recalibrated using our windscreen calibration service.

Track Use and Vibration

The GR86 is designed for spirited driving and frequently sees track use. Sustained high-speed cornering, kerb contact, and the vibration associated with aggressive driving can gradually shift the windscreen camera mounting. If ADAS warnings start appearing intermittently, the camera alignment may have drifted.

After Collision or Body Repair

Front-end impacts on the GR86 can affect the windscreen camera's internal mounting bracket even if the glass itself is undamaged. If Pre-Collision System warnings appeared after bodywork – even if the windscreen was not replaced – the camera assembly needs inspection and potential recalibration.

Toyota GR86 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Toyota GR86

No. The GR86 is co-developed with Subaru and uses ADAS hardware derived from Subaru's EyeSight technology. Calibration requires Subaru-protocol equipment, not standard Toyota Safety Sense tools. Our IMI-certified technicians carry multi-brand equipment that handles both systems. See our Toyota make page for TSS-equipped models.
