Volvo XC40 ADAS Calibration

The Volvo XC40 is our most commonly seen Volvo for calibration – its compact SUV proportions make it a city favourite, but city driving means more minor bumps and stone chips that trigger ADAS faults. If your XC40's City Safety or Adaptive Cruise Control has stopped working after a front-end repair or windscreen replacement, the IntelliSafe sensors need professional recalibration.

ADAS Systems on the Volvo XC40

The XC40 uses Volvo's CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform, which carries the full IntelliSafe suite from the base trim upward:

  • City Safety – Volvo's automatic emergency braking. On the XC40, the forward-facing radar sits behind the lower section of the front grille. Any bumper replacement or front-end repair displaces this sensor.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – shares the same front radar as City Safety. Both systems go offline together if the sensor is disturbed.
  • Pilot Assist – available on XC40 from the Plus trim and above. Combines the front radar with the windscreen-mounted camera for semi-autonomous motorway driving.
  • Lane Keeping Aid (LKA) – camera-based, mounted behind the rearview mirror on the windscreen. Requires recalibration after any windscreen swap.
  • BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) – rear-mounted radar sensors in the bumper corners. Affected by rear-end repairs.

The XC40 Recharge (fully electric and plug-in hybrid) uses the same sensor hardware as the petrol/diesel XC40 – calibration requirements are identical.

Why Your Volvo XC40 Might Need ADAS Calibration

After windscreen replacement: The XC40's windscreen camera handles Pilot Assist, Lane Keeping Aid, and Traffic Sign Recognition. Windscreen fitters like Autoglass replace the glass but often cannot recalibrate the camera – leaving multiple IntelliSafe features disabled until a specialist completes the windscreen calibration.

After bumper repair or minor collision: The front radar behind the grille is the most frequently displaced sensor on the XC40. Even a low-speed car park bump can shift it enough that City Safety and ACC show dashboard warnings.

If your XC40's dashboard shows that automatic braking or cruise control is unavailable after any front-end work, the radar sensor almost certainly needs realignment. This is a precision job requiring manufacturer-approved equipment – not something a general garage can reset with a diagnostic scan. Our guide to ADAS calibration explains what's involved.

We also calibrate the XC60 and XC90 – Volvo's mid-size and full-size SUVs with even more comprehensive IntelliSafe configurations.

Volvo XC40 ADAS Calibration — FAQ

Common questions about calibrating ADAS systems on the Volvo XC40

Yes. The XC40's forward-facing camera is bonded to the windscreen. Every windscreen replacement moves this camera out of its factory-calibrated position. Until it's recalibrated, Pilot Assist, Lane Keeping Aid, and automatic high beam all remain inactive.
