ADAS Systems on the Volvo EX90

The EX90 is built on Volvo's new SPA2 (Scalable Product Architecture 2) – a ground-up redesign from the SPA platform used in the S60 and V60. SPA2 adds lidar to Volvo's sensor suite for the first time:

• Lidar (Luminar Iris) – roof-mounted, forward-facing lidar sensor that maps the road ahead in 3D. This is the EX90's key differentiator – it enables detection at greater distances and in conditions where radar and cameras struggle. Any roof rack installation, roof repair, or impact near the roofline can affect alignment.
• City Safety – automatic emergency braking, now enhanced by lidar data alongside the front radar and camera. The front radar sits behind the lower fascia.
• Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) – radar-based, shares the front sensor with City Safety.
• Pilot Assist – semi-autonomous driving using radar, camera, and lidar together. The most advanced version of Pilot Assist in any Volvo.
• Lane Keeping Aid (LKA) – windscreen-mounted camera. Recalibration required after windscreen replacement.
• BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Steer Assist – rear radar sensors in the bumper corners.
• Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) with Auto Brake – rear sensor array detecting approaching traffic when reversing.

The EX90 also uses interior-facing cameras for driver monitoring (DMS) – detecting drowsiness and distraction. These are separate from the external ADAS sensors but may require attention after windscreen work.

EX90 Calibration Triggers – More Sensors, More Entry Points

After any front-end work: The front radar, forward-facing camera, and lidar all contribute to City Safety and Pilot Assist on the EX90. A bumper repair that only displaces the radar still requires checking whether the lidar and camera remain aligned – these three sensors are interdependent on SPA2.

After windscreen replacement: The windscreen camera handles lane keeping, traffic sign recognition, and feeds into Pilot Assist. A windscreen swap on the EX90 follows the same process as other Volvos – but given the lidar integration, a full system check is advisable alongside the windscreen calibration.

After roof work or impact: The roof-mounted lidar is unique to the EX90 in the Volvo range. Roof rack fitting, hail damage repair, or any work near the roofline can shift the lidar sensor. This is something owners of the XC90 or XC60 don't need to consider – but EX90 owners do.
